The “Revolving Door” That Changed My Career

When I started my insurance agency in 2010, I thought the biggest challenge would be growing the business.
It wasn’t.
The real challenge was people.
Over the past 15+ years, I’ve interviewed and hired thousands of individuals to join Blue Wave Financial as independent insurance agents.
Many built great careers.
But many didn’t stay.
If I’m being honest, the experience often felt like a revolving door.
People left for all kinds of reasons:
• Compensation
• Training
• Leadership
• Culture
• Opportunity elsewhere
At first, I thought this was just the nature of the insurance business. It is often said that only 8% will succeed in the insurance business.
But the more conversations I had with other business owners, the more I realized something surprising:
Everyone is dealing with the same problem. It is not just 1099 life insurance sales agents.
Restaurants. Construction companies. Medical offices. Professional service firms.
The struggle to attract and retain great people is universal.
Then something clicked for me.
When employees evaluate where they want to work, they’re not just looking at salary.
They’re asking a bigger question:
“Where will I be better taken care of?”
That’s where benefits come in.
Healthcare access. Income protection. Financial security for their family.
These things matter more than most employers realize.
Think about it for a moment:
If one company offers strong benefits and the business down the street doesn’t…
Where do you think the best employees are going to go?
Exactly.
That realization is what led me to shift a large part of my focus toward helping employers build better benefit programs through Blue Wave Financial and our employee benefits division, Elevating Benefits.
Because when businesses improve their benefits, three things tend to happen:
They attract better candidates. Their employees stay longer and their culture gets stronger.
Looking back, the hiring challenges I faced for years were actually pointing me toward the solution the entire time.
The companies that win the talent game in the next decade won’t just compete on pay.
They’ll compete on how well they take care of their people.
The employers who understand this will always have the advantage. If you’re a business owner thinking about how to strengthen your team, improve retention, or stand out in a competitive hiring market, I’d welcome the conversation. Drop your info on the Contact Us page.
